Zagreb is two towns stacked on a hill and joined by a funicular. The upper one is tiled roofs, a church with a pattern laid into it in coloured tile, and gas lamps a lamplighter still goes round and lights each evening. The lower one is Austro Hungarian fronts in ochre and green around a square. A cannon is fired from the tower at noon and has been for longer than anyone can remember. It is a quieter capital than its neighbours and the work here treats it that way, on a wall, on a tree or under a cup.
