Venice is a city built on water and slowly losing the argument. Canals instead of streets, shutters in faded green against ochre plaster, bricks going soft at the waterline, and light bouncing up off the surface onto everything above it. That upward light is what makes it worth painting and hard to paint. Every façade is a little out of true and none of the lines are straight, which is half the charm and all of the difficulty. The Venice work here runs to watercolour for that reason, and turns up on prints, ornaments, coasters and the smaller things people keep.
