Tallinn keeps a medieval town almost intact: red roofs seen from above, a town wall with its towers still standing, and pastel merchant houses around the square. Winter runs long and dark up there, so the city does Christmas properly, with the market on the square and lights strung between the old buildings. That is when it looks most like itself and the pieces made for it lean that way. The rest of the year it is quieter, low sun on limestone and the sea just out of sight. Tallinn turns up here on ornaments, prints and the things that come out in December.
