Seville is orange trees and tilework and a river that made the city rich. The cathedral is enormous and the tower beside it was a minaret first, which tells you most of the story. The patterns are Moorish, the light is flat and hard, and the colour runs to terracotta, deep green and the white of a courtyard wall. In high summer the streets are strung with awnings because the heat is otherwise unreasonable. It suits the geometric work better than almost anywhere, and comes here as prints, ornaments and the rest.
