Saint Petersburg is built on islands and canals with baroque palaces in pistachio, ochre and blue, and a gold spire on the fortress across the water. Bridges lift at night to let ships through, the river freezes solid in winter, and for a few weeks in summer the sky never fully darkens. A cathedral of coloured domes stands over one canal.
