Osaka is the loud one. Neon over the canal at Dotonbori, signs stacked on top of each other and reflected in the water, a castle sitting incongruously in a park in the middle of it all, and food on every corner. Where Kyoto is line and restraint, Osaka is colour and clutter, and it has a reputation for being blunter and funnier than the rest of the country. The brighter pop pieces suit it far better than anything quiet, and the night is really its subject: half the city only looks like itself once the signs come on. It turns up here on prints, ornaments and the smaller things you keep.
