Kyoto keeps its old shape. Wooden fronts on narrow streets, the vermilion gates climbing the hill at Fushimi, moss and raked gravel behind temple walls, and maples that turn the whole city red for a fortnight each autumn. It is a quiet place to draw, all line and restraint, and it changes completely with the season: cherry in spring, heavy green and cicadas in summer, then that red, then snow on the temple roofs. That suits the ink work and the softer washes about equally, so Kyoto turns up here in more than one style. It comes as a print for a wall, an ornament for a tree, and the smaller things you keep.
