Nicosia is a walled city laid out as a star with a line running through the middle of it. Sandstone lanes, ottoman and venetian buildings side by side, mountains visible to the north, and a dry heat that empties the streets in the afternoon. The colour is pale stone and hard shadow. It is the last divided capital in Europe and the line runs through the middle. Venetian walls encircle the old town in a perfect eleven pointed star.
