New Mexico is adobe, mesa and enormous sky. Earth coloured walls and turquoise trim, red rock formations standing on the plain, chillies drying by doorways, and light that painters have been moving there for over a century to get at. The colour is terracotta, turquoise and violet distance. Hot air balloons fill the sky over one city for a week each October. Green chile is put on everything and the question is only whether you want red as well. Pueblos here have been lived in continuously for a thousand years.
