The pyramids at Giza stand on a plateau at the edge of the city, three of them in line with smaller ones beside, built from limestone blocks that were once faced smooth and white. A sphinx sits below them carved from the bedrock, the desert starts immediately behind, and the suburbs come right up to the fence on the other side.
