Fukuoka is a bay city on the northern edge of the southern island, with food stalls set up along the river at night under canvas. A ruined castle in a park of cherry trees, a beach within the city, temples in the old quarter, and mountains behind. The stalls sell ramen with a broth cooked for many hours and it is the local pride. Spring brings blossom into the castle grounds and the whole city goes.
