Brussels is a gilded square hemmed in by guild houses, and a great deal of ordinary city around it. Art nouveau fronts on side streets, comic murals on gable ends, grey weather most of the year, and that one square which goes gold under floodlight and stops people mid sentence. The square is carpeted in cut flowers every other August. Chips are fried twice and eaten from paper with too much sauce. Comic strips are treated as a national art form rather than a hobby. The work here takes the guild houses and comes as prints, ornaments, coasters and the rest.
