Cologne is the cathedral and the river. Two black spires that were briefly the tallest thing in the world, standing right beside the station so they are the first thing you see when you arrive, and the Rhine going past behind them. The stone is dark, almost soot coloured, which makes it a good subject for ink and a hard one for watercolour. Most of the rest of the city is post war and plain, so the cathedral carries the picture almost on its own. It comes here as a print, an ornament and more.
