Bruges is a medieval town preserved almost whole and threaded with canals. Stepped gables in brick, a belfry leaning very slightly over the market square, swans on green water, and cobbles that have been there a long time. It goes quiet and misty out of season, which is when it looks most like itself. Lace has been made here for centuries and is still taught. Chocolate shops outnumber almost everything else and the standard is high. A beer is piped under the streets from brewery to bottling plant. The work here comes as prints, ornaments, coasters and the rest.
