Athens is the rock and everything that grew around it. The Acropolis stands above a low sprawling city, marble bleached to bone through the summer, olive and dust for colour, and orange trees along the streets below. Mountains close it in on three sides and the sea finishes it on the fourth. It is older than almost anything else here and it reads best drawn plainly, one silhouette against a flat pale sky, without any attempt to make it prettier than it is. Athens comes as a print, an ornament and the smaller things you keep.
