Mauritius is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean ringed almost entirely by a reef, so the lagoon inside it is calm and impossibly green while the open water beyond is dark blue. A mountain shaped like a thumb stands over the south, sugar cane covers the flat land, waterfalls come off the central plateau, and a park of coloured earth shows seven shades of volcanic soil in one hillside.
