Maputo is a coastal capital of wide avenues lined with jacaranda and flame trees, with Portuguese colonial fronts going gently to seed and an iron railway station that is finer than it needs to be. The Indian Ocean sits at the end of the roads and the light is bright and clean. The colour is ochre, flame red and sea blue.
