The Maldives is a scatter of low coral islands with water in more shades of blue and green than seems reasonable. Sand so fine it squeaks, reefs dropping away into deep water a few strokes from the beach, palms leaning over the edge, and almost no elevation anywhere. The colour is the whole point. A whole island can be walked round in less time than it takes to have lunch. Bioluminescence lights the shoreline on some nights like scattered blue sparks.
