Lyon sits where two rivers meet with a hill and a basilica above it. Renaissance courtyards linked by covered passages through the buildings, ochre and rose fronts on the peninsula between the waters, painted murals on blank walls, and a food reputation it does not have to defend. The colour is warm ochre and river green. Whole blocks light up for a festival of light in December. Small restaurants called bouchons serve offal and nobody apologises. Silk weaving built the city and the workshops are still upstairs. The pieces here come as prints, ornaments and more.
