Hohenzollern stands alone on a conical hill above the plain, with towers and battlements that look like an illustration rather than a building. It was rebuilt in the nineteenth century on the site of two earlier castles, the approach spirals up through the trees, and on a misty morning the whole thing appears to float above the cloud. It is still owned by the family whose name it carries. Fog fills the valley below on autumn mornings and leaves only the towers showing, which is the photograph everyone wants.
