Gothenburg is a port with canals, a moat and a very long avenue running through the middle. Brick and stucco in ochre and red, shipyard cranes still standing on the far bank as monuments, trams rattling through the centre, and an archipelago of bare granite islands just offshore. The light is northern and low. An amusement park in the middle of town has a wooden coaster people queue for. Seafood comes off the boats into a market built like a church.
