Charleston is pastel houses turned sideways to the street with long porches down one flank to catch the breeze. Wrought iron gates, palmetto and live oak with moss, a waterfront of pale colour, and a summer humidity that explains every architectural decision. The colour is that row of pastel fronts. Earthquake bolts run through many of the houses and their ends are decorative. Sweetgrass baskets are woven on the corners by people whose families always have. A market hall runs several blocks and has done since the eighteenth century. The pieces here come as prints, ornaments and more.
