Bern is a medieval old town on a peninsula inside a loop of green river, with arcades running for miles along the streets so you can walk the centre in the rain without getting wet. A clock tower with moving figures, fountains with painted statues on columns at every junction, a bear park by the water, and the alps on the horizon on a clear day.
