Antigua is a grid of low colonial streets under three volcanoes, with ruined churches left as the earthquakes finished them. Doors and walls painted ochre, indigo and rose, cobbles that punish the ankles, jacaranda in the squares, and coffee grown on the slopes above. The colour is that paintwork with volcanic grey behind. It was the capital until earthquakes persuaded everyone to move the government. Processions in Holy Week lay carpets of dyed sawdust along the streets to be walked over.
