Havana is peeling pastel colonnades, fifties cars in colours to match, and a sea wall the waves come over. Baroque and neoclassical fronts in ochre, turquoise and rose with the render falling off, laundry across balconies, and a fortress across the harbour mouth. The colour is that faded paintwork. A cannon is fired at the fortress every evening at the same hour. Rum and cigars are made within sight of the harbour. A vast cemetery of marble streets is a city in its own right.
