San Juan is a walled old town of painted houses with a fortress at the point and the Atlantic beating on the rocks below. Blue cobbles brought as ballast, doors in coral, yellow and jade, a cathedral in white, and green hills rising behind the newer city. The colour is that paintwork against dark blue stone. A bay nearby glows at night from the organisms in the water. Cats live in the fort grounds and are looked after by a charity. Piraguas of shaved ice and syrup are sold from carts in the heat.
