Nuuk is a small capital on a fjord with mountains standing over it and icebergs going past offshore. Timber houses painted red, blue and yellow against bare rock, a colonial quarter by the old harbour, and a sea that keeps working ice down the coast all summer. The colour is that paintwork against grey stone and white ice. The ice sheet begins not far inland and is deeper than anything else on earth outside the poles.
