Marrakech is pink. The old walls are rammed earth the colour of terracotta and they hold that colour through the whole day, going from dusty rose at noon to something close to red at dusk, with the Atlas mountains sitting white behind them in winter. Inside the walls it is all pattern: zellij tilework in green and blue, carved plaster, painted doors, and the souks running dark and narrow between them. It is a place of surfaces rather than skylines, which suits the geometric work better than a silhouette would. It comes here as a print, an ornament, a coaster and the rest.
