Madrid sits high and dry in the middle of the country and behaves like it. Wide boulevards, ochre and red across the old centre, a royal palace with too many windows to count, and a park that swallows an afternoon. The light is harder and the shadows blacker than on either coast, and the evenings go on a long time. Nothing much happens before the evening and then everything does at once.
