Ha Long Bay is thousands of limestone towers standing out of green water, most of them too steep to land on. Junks with ribbed sails between them, caves worn into the bases, mist that sits between the islands in the cool months, and a horizon that is all silhouette. The colour is grey rock, jade water and white haze. Floating villages sit between the islands with school boats and fish farms. Kayaking through the low arches at the right tide is the way in.
