Galveston is a barrier island of victorian houses in candy colours with wide porches, a long seawall, and the Gulf pushing at it. Palms along the boulevard, a historic strand of iron fronted buildings, and hurricanes in the history of every structure that survived. The colour is pastel timber and gulf grey green. The whole island was raised by several feet after the worst storm. Mardi Gras here is older than the one in New Orleans. A pier of fairground rides stands out over the water.
