Edinburgh is built on volcanic rock and looks it. The castle sits on the crag, the closes run steeply down off the Royal Mile, and the stone is dark with centuries of soot. There is a hill in the middle of the city that you can climb before breakfast. It is grey for much of the year, which sounds like a complaint and is not: grey is what makes the gold light on wet stone worth painting, and the city gets that light in long slabs in the late afternoon. Edinburgh comes here as a print, an ornament, a coaster and the rest.
