Bydgoszcz is a canal city with granaries in timber and brick standing on the waterfront, and a sculpture of a man crossing the river on a wire above it. An island of parkland sits in the middle, an opera house on the bank, and the whole place is greener and quieter than most cities of its size. The canal here was among the first built in this part of Europe. Water from here runs eventually to two different seas, because the canal joined two river systems that had never met.
