American Samoa is volcanic ridges dropping almost vertically into a deep blue Pacific. A harbour set in a drowned crater, rainforest on the slopes, reefs close inshore, and villages along whatever flat ground there is. The green is heavy and constant and the rain keeps it that way. The colour is that green against deep water. Sunday is quiet in a way that visitors are asked to respect. It is the only part of the country south of the equator. Tattooing here is done with tools of bone and is an ordeal. The pieces here come as prints, ornaments and more.
