Whistler is two mountains above a purpose built village of timber and stone, linked by a gondola that crosses the valley between them in a single span. Ski runs in winter, bike trails in summer, glacial lakes in the valley floor that turn turquoise with melt, and cedar forest on the lower slopes. The two mountains between them make the largest ski area on the continent. The village was built from nothing for a bid that failed, and the games arrived decades later anyway.
