Valparaiso is a port of houses in every colour stacked up steep hills, with funiculars built to save people the climb. Corrugated iron painted bright, murals across whole walls and stairways, container cranes below, and the Pacific grey and cold beyond the breakwater. Poets have written about it and it deserves them. The colour is the paintwork. Some of the funiculars have been running for well over a century. Dogs sleep on every landing of every staircase and are fed by the whole street.
