Salvador is a cliff top old town of baroque churches and houses painted in strong blue, yellow and green, with a lift dropping down to the port below. Gold leaf inside the churches, drums in the street, and a bay so large it gave the place its name. The colour is that paintwork and the gold. Carnival runs through the streets rather than in a stadium. Capoeira is played in circles in the squares with a drum and a berimbau. Dendê oil and coconut make the food unlike anywhere else in the country. The pieces here come as prints, ornaments and more.
